The polite abuser: Using politeness theory to examine emotional abuse

This study examined how instigators of abuse used emotionally abusive messages to manipulate politeness attack their partners' face. Additionally, we studied the people experiencing responded such messages. Using thematic co-occurrence analysis (TCA), analyzed 20 semi-structured interviews with those who have experienced abuse. Participants reported that all three Austin's (1990) face act strategies (a) bald-on-record, (b) on record inappropriate redress, and (c) off-record, as well emergent strategy (d) non-response. Similarly, indicated they strategies: positive politeness, not doing face-threatening (FTA). TCA revealed five relationships between instigators' responses Finally, discussed theoretical implications practical applications.
